The Chicago Department of Public Health was honored by Peers as the Local Health Department of the Year by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). The national organization representing more than 2,800 local and state health departments.

CDPH was recognized in the large category, in part for its efforts to create innovative policy solutions to curb the use of menthol-flavored cigarettes among youth. Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared a commitment to help our children become the first tobacco-free generation and this award is another indication that we are moving in the right direction.

“This award proves what we already know, that in Chicago we are moving the needle forward,” said CDPH Commissioner Bechara Choucair, M.D. “Life expectancy and vaccination rates are going up while smoking rates and obesity levels are coming down. By working together with partners across the City, we will continue to improve the health and well-being of every Chicago resident.”
